The NAFA Guide to Air Filtration (1993) explains that, "[t]he removal of dust which an electronic air cleaner has captured can be accomplished in two general ways":
1.It can be washed off the collector plates. The typical process uses detergent and hot water.
2.If it has agglomerated on the plates, it can be allowed to blow off the plates. The blowout can then be captured by a mechanical filter placed downstream of the electronic air filter. This two-step process is known as agglomeration.
