Upgrading a Chiller Plant

Fabel (1997) provides ten considerations when upgrading a chiller plant:

  1. Operating Requirements – Load profile and capacity
  2. Electrical Supply – power circuits and transformers
  3. Energy Sources – electric, natural gas, steam, engine
  4. Cooling Towers – condition, fill, type, motors, etc.
  5. Drives – Primary Mover
  6. Controls – integrated or stand-alone
  7. Real Estate – equipment footprint
  8. Logistics – space, access, demolition, excavation, etc.
  9. CFCs - Refrigerants
  10. Life-Cycle Costs – total cost for 20 to 25 years
